The main objective of this project concerns CO2 compensation by planting trees.
In a global context, offsetting CO2 by planting trees can be done in any location as it has the same positive effect in the fight against Climate Change. Therefore, for its privileged location near the equator, Nicaragua’s climate is ideally suited for CO2 compensation as the trees grow quickly and therefore can absorb more CO2 than in more arid regions. Following the CO2 sequestration studies developed by the CATIE on tropical fauna, we can calculate 500 kg of CO2 compensated per tree during its lifetime.
The project reforests the “Rio Blanco” region by aiming to regenerate and improve the soil. The project also has direct benefits for the local population by providing easier accesses to potable water. Hide
History of the project
Since 1950, Nicaragua has lost about 50% of its forest cover, and as a consequence also lost most of its biological diversity. This local deforestation was caused by the constant exploitation of land, and by the wood business. These facts triggered the soil’s impoverishment, and had a heavy impact on the quality of available drinkable water.

The community
This planting project also aims to help local communities who live from agriculture and cattle. There are about thirty families living in each area where are planting is taking place. They need advice on how to make the land more productive and benefit from the trees that are planted in their region.
The species
We plant ten local species of trees, such as the Guaba and the Guanacaste. All of them have been selected for their specific qualities. Of those ten species, five of them seem particularly important to us, as they will especially help us compensate CO2 emissions. They will also regenerate the soil, and most of them produce fruits or leaves that have medicinal or nutritional benefits. Hide
Positive effects
- Offset CO2 levels
- Reduce soil erosion
- Increase quantity and quality of potable water available for local communities
- Counteracts climate change
- Counteracts deforestation
- Regenerates the soil

Forestry Expert
Fadir Rojas Laguna is the main forestry expert for the project.
He is being helped by three more qualified individuals: a forest engineer and two agronomist technicians.
Local Families
Evidently it is very important to involve local families. About 20 families participate in the project and can benefit from our specialists’ experience. Hide
