Main objectives
Alamanga Reforestation Project combines environmental, social and economic goals:
1. Environmental goals:
a. To plant native trees in order to protect the local biodiversity
b. To grow trees for firewood and timber
c. To grow trees for carbon sequestration
d. To regenerate depleted soils and increase its productivity

2. Social and economic goals :
a. To build development opportunities and extra revenues for the local populations
b. To create an agroforestry cooperative
c. To raise awareness on environment protection within the local community
d. To contribute to better living conditions in the area
We believe the model implemented by Alamanga can easily be duplicated in other parts of Madagascar, and we wish it will soon be spread in order to counteract deforestation on a wider scale. Hide
History of the project
Against deforestation in Madagascar…
Since 1953, Madagascar has lost about 80% of its forest cover. Deforestation on the island is largely the result of three activities: slash-and-burn agriculture, logging, and the production of firewood and charcoal for cooking fires.
Today, the Malagasy forest loses from 200 000 up to 300 000 hectares per year. Preventing… Learn More
Against deforestation in Madagascar…
Since 1953, Madagascar has lost about 80% of its forest cover. Deforestation on the island is largely the result of three activities: slash-and-burn agriculture, logging, and the production of firewood and charcoal for cooking fires.
Today, the Malagasy forest loses from 200 000 up to 300 000 hectares per year. Preventing plans are insufficient to curb this trend, and the authorities lack the financial and technical means to replant at least as much trees.
Deforestation poses a great threat to the unique « mega-biodiversity » in Madagascar, where 95% of the species are endemic. Due to this forest loss, a large fraction of species have been lost already, and eventually it may result in the extinction of about half of Madagascar’s unique species of plants.
This highlights the urgency of the situation. In order to ensure the conservation and preservation of its endemism, Madagascar do need more trees to be planted, now !
Reverse the situation
After studies in France and travels around the world, Marie-Nomena came back to her native country in September 2009, where she started working in the family vineyard and gained an expertise on agroforestry projects. Deeply concerned by the deforestation of her beloved island, she believes action has to be taken to reverse the situation.
This is why she decided to link reforestation and economic empowerment : after six months of gestation, she gave birth to her long-awaited project, named « Alamanga », which means the « blue/sacred forest » in Malagasy language.
The plantation
Planting started in early 2011 with three species of trees : the Acacia Mangium (3 Ha), the Grevillia Robusta (3 Ha), and the Eucalyptus Robusta (2 Ha). In total, 12 500 trees have been planted.
They have been selected for their rapid growth and adaptability, and for they are used as timber and firewood.
Since November 2011, the project has started its second planting phase, by planting native and medicinal species. The objective is to increase local economy and productivity of the soil.
Alamanga has become a proud Tree-Nation member plantation in December 2011. Hide
Positive effects
The process of reforestation implemented addresses many issues : ecological restoration, global warming, economic empowerment and social awareness.
Environmental impact :
- Counteracts deforestation, desertification and climate change
- Protects local biodiversty
- Offsets CO2 levels

- Protects local biodiversty
- Offsets CO2 levels
- Rejuvenates the soil quality and improves its productivity
- Reduces soil erosion
- Restores an healthy forest system and brings the ecosystem back into balance
Social and economic impact :
The poverty ratio in the rural areas of Ambalavao are of 73% (2005), and the majority of the population lives from agriculture and cattle. Alamanga aims to develop and stimulate a green economy by directly employing people in the community, on the plantation site or via local cooperatives.
- Develops a green economy in the area, creates jobs and living wages
- Produces durable firewood and timber
- Produces medicines, silk, essential oils and staple food
- Improves wood exploitation practices
- Improves living conditions
- Raises awareness on environment protection Hide

The plantation is situated in the Upper-Matsiatra region, on the malagasy highlands, 12km south-east from the town of Ambalavao, and 470 km south from Antananarivo, the capital. The entrance to the plantation is on the southern outskirts of Ambalavao, and it is on the edge of the protected areas of the Andringitra National Park. There are two other ecotourist sites near the site : the Anja Community Park and the Ifandana Rock.
Like all the malagasy highlands, Ambalavao relief is made of a succession of hills and mountains. The ground is red – characteristic of a feralitic soil and covered by a grassy savannah.
The plantation is 1 km away from the River Mananatana. The dry season is from May to October and the rainy season from November to April. The zone receives an average of 1 200 mm of rainfall a year, and the average temperature is 20°C (it goes from 6°C up to 35°C) . Endemism flora rate is 83% with 20 endemic regional species.
