The main objective of this project, is primarily environmental, but also closely linked to the humanitarian aid that it will provide in the long term. The project will benefit local populations in terms of welfare, education and farming practices. The plantation will allow the soil to regenerate and will help increase the productivity of the land.
Furthermore, the plantation will produce additional benefits such as the production of Arabic Gum (from the Acacia Senegal). Such products can be sold on local markets, or even exported, thus creating an extra revenue stream next to what can largely still be considered farming on a subsistence level.
The planting techniques are adapted to the local environment and can easily be employed on other plantations in the region. We are convinced that combining ecological and economic goals is the most effective way to spread our efficient planting methods in the region. Hide
History of the project
Desertification is one of the primary consequences of climate change and it is affecting mostly developing countries. The African continent, and especially the sub-Sahara regions are highly exposed to the problem of desertification and thus poverty. That's why Tree-Nation wanted to start its first project in Niger.

Desertification is one of the primary consequences of climate change and it is affecting mostly developing countries. The African continent, and especially the sub-Sahara regions are highly exposed to the problem of desertification and thus poverty. That's why Tree-Nation wanted to start its first project in Niger.
Why Niger?
After reviewing several possibilities we decided to start the project in Niger taking into account following conditions:
- A certain level of existing infrastructure
- A need for reforestation due to desertification, deforestation
- A professional local team with a high level of experience in operating in the region
- Relatively easy access to the plantation
- Positive economic benefits of the plantation for the local population (fruits, leaves, agricultural benefits)
- Comprehension for the benefits of a project, as well as engagement and interest on the part of the local population.
- The support of local government entities
Apart from the conditions listed above, we took into account that according to the HDI index Niger is the “poorest country in the world” (177/177). The beneficial impact of the Tree-Nation plantation is therefore much higher in this country compared to more developed regions.
Selection of Species
We always plant local species and also ones that produce something for the local population (fruits, leaves, Arabic gum, etc…)
In Niger for example, we have chosen 15 among the 3000 local species in function of what they produce and their adaptability to the conditions. Per hectare, these 15 trees species will allow higher revenues for the local population compared to a hectare that is being used for agricultural means.
Agro-forestry
When possible Tree-Nation will always favor agro-forestry methods.
The “oldest science in the world”, consists of mixing the plantation of trees and agriculture. This allows an increase in agricultural productivity as the trees provide shelter from winds, the sun, while also allowing better access to water due to the trees’ root systems. Hide

Plantation Location
Our plantation is in DOSSO, 150km east from Niamey. GPS Coordinates: N 12°59'43'' E 3°20'15''
This zone receives an average of about 500 mm of rainfall a year, which is more than enough for the species we plant. Learn More

With the help of INRAN (Institut National de Recherche en Agronomie du Niger), Tree-Nation benefits from more than 30 years of experience in fighting desertification by tree planting. Aboubacar Ichaou is our main forestry expert. After studying at Niamey University, Aboubacar completed his research in the Agronomy University of Montpelliers. Now specialized in Agro-forestry he successfully lead hundreds of projects of diverse sizes and can be thanked for stopping the desert in many places in Niger.
The INRAN is divided into several local entities, covering the different climatic conditions of the country. Tree-Nation works with primarily with the Niamey, Dosso and Bonkoukou centers.
Forestry Expert
Doctor Aboubacar Ichaou, director of the Niamey center, is our main forestry expert.
After completing his studies at the university of Niamey, Doctor Ichaou completed his research at the Université d'Agronomie de Montpelliers in France.
He now specializes in agro forestry and has successfully headed several hundred projects in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.

INRAN is an organization that is recommended by the CIRAD Français (Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement).
Responsible of the Tree Nurseries
Boubabcar Abdou, water and forestry technician is responsible for the Tree-Nation nurseries. He is in charge of the procurement of the grains and their evolution in the nurseries. The quality and the sourcing of the grains is a crucial element in any plantation. Especially for the Acacia Senegal, where it is important to ensure that a satisfactory level of Arabic Gum production. Hide
