Do you buy in supermarkets? fresh food from local markets? do you buy local food or food that has travelled far?

What does motivate your choices when you buy food?

It is unfortunately a sad fact of modern living that small local outlets have been replaced by big supermarkets on the edges of towns that people can only drive to and once there you are presented with a vast range of over packaged food that could come from anywhere, but the prices are so cheap that many people just buy all of their groceries once there. I live near to a town centre so am often able to buy groceries on the way home, like fruit and veg from the greengrocers and fresh bread from the bakery etc, but not everybody can do this as they finish work later than i do and cant get to markets and things. If there is a local product in season then I choose that but many things that I eat have travelled from another country. Also for meat eaters, choosing organic chickens and milk etc is becoming more popular as recently there has been a lot of  information on the tv about intensive farming. I dont eat meat but choose organic free range eggs and egg products and organic milk.
More often in Supermarkets, but I think that buyin fresh fruit in the local markets is much better ... I have not really think a lot about what food I consume...So thank you, flowerpower, I will definitely think about it then!
