le meilleur moment est quand cela symbolise quelque chose de précis, ça ajoute une valeur supplémentaire à l'arbre planté. (par exemple, planter un arbre qd il arrive un évènement important ds sa vie, ou simplement ds le monde; qd on a atteint un objectif précis, ou pour se souvenir d'une date clé,...)

On a local scale, in a country like France (which has more trees each year), my personal favorite would be to plant trees within the cities or close by (which is clearly not easy!).

When planting is the second question, the first being : where can I plant a tree?

Obviously, I have no land of my own. I wonder if this is legit to plant in public forests without authorization (I doubt it, for France).

Any idea?

the best moment to plant a tree is 20 years ago. the second best moment is now! (it's an old proverb)
The best moment to plant a tree would be.... every moment.
At any hour of the day (or night), any month of the year, in some location on earth,
there is will be a perfect window to plant a tree... whether one plants in person or by proxy.
Certains disent que "à la Sainte Catherine tout arbre prend racines" et c'est très important pour un arbre d'être planté à la bonne saison, la terre va bien se tasser autour pendant l hiver et au printemps il sera bien. Mais cela n'est valable que sous certaines latitudes, et puis faut il mieux avoir une date précise ou bien suivre son envie ? Ce qui est bien sur Tree Nation c'est que à tout moment, le jour, la nuit, seul ou à plusieurs, pour n'importe quelle occasion, dés qu'on en a envie, on a juste à cliquer et hop, on plante un arbre et hop encore un arbre et encore un arbre. Alors quand faut il planter ? Là, tout de suite et c'est celui là le meilleur moment pour la planète.

The best moments to plant trees are usually between March and April,because the trees planted get a chance to further develop their roots and tie them in the ground where they are planted and thus getting prepared before the cold weather comes over them.

This is true for oak trees (like the 5.000 forest plantation we just participated for this weekend) as well as fruit trees (pears and mirobolam we used as support). The hole used should be 40 cm in all directions (height, wide, length), and the distance between trees varies upon the trees. For oak we used 70cm  from the middle of the tree to the middle of the hole for the next tree.

What I wrote above applies to temperate climate of course.

As for planting a tree in general, we should always plant trees, even if someone else does it for us (like supporting certain organizations all around the world to plant them for us, especially if the weather is bad or is not suited for planting in our part of the world).
