We just improved the navigation of our new map. We are still fixing some small bugs on Internet Explorer but it should work very smoothly on Safari and Firefox. Now it lets you zoom out and soon you will access our new plantations. At the lowest zoom level you will find a worldmap showing deforestation and reforestation per country.

Please leave here your comments, either if you find bugs or if you just love it. Say it all!

You're right there is more we can do. We are working on providing more information (from the site and from the map as well).

Progressively we hope to reach a very good user experience from this map. thanks for the tips.

  Hi Max,

yep, you're right, zoom is not the best in this region.

The fact is we don't know exactly where our tree is with your tool. We see a tree with other trees, but that's all. Is there village near from trees? How many people ? Rivers, roads...

Continue to improve your tool, we are expecting this kind of information.

Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback iguane39

We did in fact look at several mapping APIs when we started developing the map, one of them being Google's. But we found things such as

1 - as far as we could see, the closest zoom option was too far away from our trees. Each tree is planted at about 4-5 meter from the next one in the plantation, and the closest zoom with Google would show tiny little trees, which would make it difficult for you to interact with it.

2 - we show 100s trees at a time, and you can directly interact with these, when we loaded all of these on the Google map API the whole system would slow down to a brink - on a powerful computer - as said, their API is extremely powerful, but it has been built with a completely different use.

3 - essentially we found that most APIs out there were very powerful but unfortunately we didn't believe that they were the best option for our map.

We've tried to build a very light weight map, which is written in Javascript and uses AJAX extensively in order to provide you with a visual way to interact directly with the trees in the virtual plantation and to do so with the best user experience possible.

Iguane39, you say it would be better and simpler with Google maps, could you may be explain what you feel is lacking or where we may have come short? we'll try our best to improve.

Also, you can see the position of the plantation half way down this page http://www.tree-nation.com/the_project.php?project_page=2 but unfortunately Google's images of the area are not great quality and probably outdated so we can't zoom in much.
We plan in the future to mix the Google map with ours so the user can go from one visualization to the other. And we look forward for our users comments to improve the map experience.

Why don't you use Google Maps instead of this map using Flash. This would be better and simpler.

Do you have coordonates for trees, we should be able to locate them on Google Maps.

Thanks.

Bonjour,

(en) Why do the trees sold by sets (5 or 50 acacias) only take up one square on the map?

(en) Yes, I thought that it was a bug! Maybe you could add a text explanation as to how to return to the plantation level?

(eo) Jes, mi pensis ke tio estis program-eraro!

once on the highest level of the map, you can't zoom in again. You have to click on the plantation icon to enter the map. We made this so that it will be possible to enter various plantations in the future.

Is that confusing?

Bonjour,

(en) The map is nice, but why is it not possible to get back to Earth once you're in space?
