Spain: Thirst, Drought and Desertification This summer Spain suffered one of its harshest droughts ever recorded in what has been identified as the hottest year for the Mediterranean country in more than a century. "Thirsty agriculture", a Mediterranean climate, rapid expansion of tourism and construction, over-exploitation of aquifers and ignorance of or indifference to environmental issues are the key factors contributing to Spain's acute lack of water supplies. Studies have shown that Spain is the developed country most at risk from drought and desertification. link on text

Yes, what you say is true but we also have also floods. Last week have been raining "cats and dogs" in whole Spain and river Ebro has overflown in many places. I live in south Spain and I'm not very worried with the situation; we have a lot of alternatives to manage the problem, at least at short term. Near 80% of water demand comes from agriculture and we can reduce demand significantly by improving irrigation system. And we have enough financial resources. The real problem is Africa and it should be very good that initiatives like this of Tree-nation were successful.
