Alamanga plantation was started by Marie-Nomena in early 2011, with the purpose to fight against deforestation in her country, Madagascar. she decided to link reforestation and economic empowerment as deforestation on the island is largely the result of three activities: slash-and-burn agriculture, logging, and the production of fuelwood and charcoal for cooking fires.
Alamanga, which means the « blue/sacred forest » in Malagasy language, is located in the Upper-Matsiatra region, on the malagasy highlands, 12km south-east from the town of Ambalavao.
A permanent staff of 5 people and up to twenty seasonal workers compose the team. All together, They plant fast growth trees to be used as timber, firewood and carbon sequestration and native species in order to protect the local biodiversity and develop non-timber forest products .
On the other hand, this project is working to build development opportunities and extra revenues for the local populations , as well as raising awareness on environment protection
Alamanga aspires to reduce deforestation in Madagascar, proving that preserving a forested area, while exploiting and making a durable use of it, is more profitable than destroying it.
