When I talked to the City Manager of Saint Cloud in January, he had a few important points that set back the this project a little. First of all, Recycle America has mentioned that they are transforming some of their facilities into single-stream facilities that would cut down on sorting all the recycled materials. However, they have verified with the City Manager that the facility located nearest to us is not yet converted to such a facility.

Recycle America is asking for a fee to collect the material on a curb-side basis, and this would be brought upon the households in the city. This in turn would bring in no revenue for the city. Rather than impose the fees on each household, the city turned to other ways of collecting recycled materials (a drop-off site).

As this has been a great temporary solution, I am convinced that there is a way to restore a more organized curb-side service. Also,  the City Manager had stated that one reason the city has had trouble in the past years to negotiate a new contract with Recycle America is simply that the city does not bring in enough recycled materials for the company to be interested in. Therefore, not only is this project to urge the City of Saint Cloud and the company Recycle America to form a new contract, but to urge the residents in Saint Cloud of the importance of recycling and the impact it could have on the environment.
