Hi, I am considering  getting a beautiful  Shar Pei from a pet store i saw close to my house. Would you buy a puppy from a pet store? 

I feel bad because i know how many abandoned dogs there are in the streets and shelters but I love this dog and I can´t find it any where else.. :(

  He is so cuuuuute!!!

NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store! All that does is keep the horrific cycle of puppy mills alive.
Anyone that is  in dead set on getting a purebred of any breed should call or go online and check out local shelters first, then petfinders or The AKC Breed Organization first, which will point you in the direction of a rescue near you for that breed.
All breeds have these rescues, even if you're looking overseas, or for a UKC registry.

Never, never buy a puppy from a pet store!!! They rely on people falling in love with those adorable puppies, and they definitely are, but purchasing one is what keeps that puppy's mama locked in a cage with no exercise, no love, no playtime, walks or toys, and substandard food and care so she can pump out litter after litter until her poor exhausted body withers away at a very young age.

Puppy stores get their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills will stop producing puppies when they are no longer profitable. Each time someone buys a puppy from the pet store, they are prolonging the misery for thousands of dogs.

Please rethink, and adopt a homeless puppy from a shelter or adoption group. there are breed specific rescues everywhere in the world, so go online, and find a sharpei puppy that has been dumped.

Linda Kittehlady sent me the link to check out your group and i read your post ... i don't know what choice you made but i would like to offer this: it is widely known that pet stores support those who run puppy mills. Owners of puppy mills breed their dogs to death keeping those able to reproduce and neglecting to death/and or killing those who are no longer of use to them.
I have signed many petitions on Care2.com, Change.org, and awareness through organizations like the ASPCA and people like Cesar Millan who have first hand experience legally removing abused dogs from puppy mills!

Hi LINDA, My personal opinion is NO, No Way !
The reason so many Dogs & Puppies are PUT DOWN these days, is because people buy Puppies from Pet stores & Markets, who most likely deal with a less than HUMANE, PUPPY MILL ! (only interested in the money, NOT the welfare of their Animals)

While I agree that the SHAR PEI'S are Very Cute ; they do require more than the usual amount, of Grooming & Personal Hygiene attention !
Their Wrinkles* need to be kept clean, especially around their heads, as Bacteria can build up from the Saliva & dirt that gets trapped in there !

Hav you thought of contacting a RESCUE group that specialises in this breed?
Many Rescue groups keep closely in touch with the "KILL" shelters & they will go & pull out* the Breed they are interested in & find it a Foster Home Temporarily.
They do this because many dogs are put on "Death Row" within 24 hrs, because the shelters are OVERFLOWING with Poor Confused Animals.!!!

ANIMALS, that have been dumped & abondoned by owners, who were conned by a Puppy Mill, Pet Shop or Market, into buying a Puppy that has grown up too big, too sickly, has genetic defects that require expensive surgery (from inbreeding at the Puppy Mill) barks too much, is too active, etc & etc., !
There are many reasons why Owners are, or become, IRRESPONSIBLE !

Sadly, our Society has become " The Throw Away Society" where Pets are concerned & Govt. needs to make tougher Laws about Animal Neglect & Cruelty & I believe they should make it much Harder & more expensive to be a Breeder, with licenses & strict Rules !
There is a need for Harsher punishments for those People who think that Pets are just *Things* ; not living, feeling creatures !
