The increasing focus on eco-transport is suggesting alternative fuel and other ways of transportation. Discuss new means of ecological and environmental friendly transportation here and feel free to add comments and links.

One of the recent advances in ecologically-friendly means of transport is the invention of the hybrid car. This car has two engines: one is electric and is powered by the energy generated by breaking and the other is run on fuel. But now for the burning question: is this car just a half-hearted image-conscious attempt to switch people over to greener transport or is it really effective in reducing emissions and our reliance on fuel-run vehicles? Is this the solution for people who aren't convinced by electric cars? Or is this a practical way of getting around - in the city the car will run on electricity and once you go a further distance and require greater speed it switches to fuel. Sounds like the perfect combo...decide for yourselves by looking up a bit more about it here Would you consider buying a hybrid car?

Whaou Linda, you really know what you´re saying!

I completely agree with you...

The problem is that car manufacturers are charging more for these new hybrids than for their gas-using counterparts. Though the car makers tout extra performance, the bigger sticker price can make it harder to justify the economics of buying a hybrid.
And what about the carpool?

there is one problem with hybrid cars (with any new cars for that matter). A lot of resources (and emissions) go into actually building a car. A study I just read is talking about the fact that a 3/4 of a cars' "footprint" in terms of emsissions is actually due to its production. So maybe it's better to keep the old and more polluting car for a while. In Italy for example they are doing to wrong thing since the government gives incentives to buy new and less polluting cars (Fiat plays a role there for sure!). However producing these new cars releases much more emissions than continuing to use older cars. Don't believe the hype and the best thing to do is simple: drive less...

a hybrid car is a good idea, but what about recycling the cars we already have and converting the diesel ones to run on recycled vegetable oil?  I have tried to do that by buying an old car and using recycled waste cooking oil.  it seems to work

all best wishes
