A beautiful project

In December 2006, Brad Pitt convened a group of experts in New Orleans to brainstorm about building green affordable housing on a large scale to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Having spent time with community leaders and displaced residents determined to return home, Pitt realized that an opportunity existed to build houses that were not only stronger and healthier, but that had less impact on the environment.

The goal is to construct 150 homes (one of the larger rebuilding projects in the city) in the culturally vibrant Lower 9th Ward, one of the most devastated areas of New Orleans, with an emphasis on developing an affordable and sustainable system that could be replicated.

So far, 52 homes have been sponsored.

Isn't that area under sea level?  It's great Brad's doing something, but why there??  Why not somewhere more inland?  Most likely that place will have another hurricane again as they get worse w/global warming.  They just should stay away from that area.  That's the folly of man, building on costal areas.

well, that's interesting for a larger view of what's going on there.

  I do hope they are able to bring some of those who lost their homes back, but it seems like the powers that be only want casinos and oil rigs on the gulf coast.  Just look at what they did with the public housing that wasn't really damaged - they just locked them all out.  Check out oxfam.org for more info.

Thanks for the reminder on this one! I remember when this started, it's rare if you hear more about it these days. Thanks for the heads up...it is a beautiful effort.
